"Ace"

I do outside dog grooming and today I just did not feel like fighting with a certain mean natured maltese so I gave him some ace. I just had to clean out his ears and there was no way he was going to let me. It was a breeze to clip him, groom and bathe him, so much nicer than having to deal with his growling, biting and jerking. About 2 hours after I gave him the ace he seemed almost back to his mean ole self but after he went home I got a call from the owner stating he just was not himself. (I guess she missed him biting her) Now I am wondering if the ace could actually harm him. It sounds from how she is describing him like he is drunk. I have never had any problems with my own dogs but am getting afraid this lady is going to cause me trouble over a dog that if it was mine would have put him down as he is not a suitable pet with his terrible disposition. It is one thing to bite the groomer but to bite your own owner and family members is another. Has anyone here ever had any bad things happen from giving ace?

Ace will last 8 hours. Also I was told you need to watch them in the heat because they will overheat a lot quicker if they have Ace in their systems. On horses it can have the opposite affect on some, so I'm betting he's having a different reaction to it than other dogs.
I sure hope you don't have any trouble with the gal!

Did you ask her permission to drug her dog? That is very careless. Ace is a drug and just like some people have issues with certain drugs, dogs can as well.
Why not just say you don't want to groom him anymore rather than endanger him. This may sound harsh, but it would really piss me off if someone druged my dog without my permission.

I thought about asking first but knew she would say no. The main reason she was bringing her dog to me is that they had to knock him out at the vets because he was so difficult. I managed to get him done 3-4 times but it was hard on the both of us. Me fearing getting bit and him working himself up into a dither. He has always had a really disgusting ear problem and I was determined to clean those ears knowing ace was going to be the only way to get it done. I think in my subconcious I wanted to make her not want to bring him back to me. If she does call again I will tell her I will not do him unless he is sedated. Life is too short to deal with mean dogs.

IF they have any seizure tendancies, the ace will cause them to seize. Otherwise, To my knowledge,it is very safe. We used to use it all the time at the vets I worked at, to sedate the barkers.

Just a note....don't use Ace on Boxers. It can be a bad deal.

I hope that the vet at least tells people what they are doing. Ace can be safe, but it also can kill.
And a vet has the drugs to reverse different sedatives and anestetics.

I too would be very upset with a groomer that sedated my dog without my permission..........I think if I were you Hedda, I would just politely tell her that you cannot groom the dog anymore...could be trouble lurking for you with this one! Good luck!

Vicki had sent me a link to a sling for a dog-would something like that have worked, where he'd have no footing?

I have a sling but it really does not help much with the psycho dogs. I also have a special tool sold at grooming conventions but it did not work with him either. He does not have seizures but can turn from a sweet little dog into a tasmanian devil with no provocation. The owner makes excuses for him like he was a rescue from a bad kennel that abused their dogs. I think he is just plain mean. If she calls again I will just tell her I will not groom him unless she gets a sedative to give him ahead of time.
